Position Summary
Reports to: Co-Executive Directors

An integral member of the R2S team, the After-School and Summer Program Academic Director assists the Co-Executive Directors by supporting elementary students at R2S’ community partner Chosen PODS in learning foundational reading skills. The After-School and Summer Program Academic Director works directly with R2S staff and Chosen PODS staff and administration serving children K-5th grade, strategizing literacy support and enrichment programs, providing literacy training to staff, supporting literacy instruction in K-5th grade classrooms, and coordinating family engagement and access opportunities for families of students engaged in the Chosen PODS After-School and summer programs.

Programming
- Coordinate the R2S Tutoring Program and literacy enrichment opportunities at Chosen PODS After-School and Summer Camp
- Collaborate with Chosen PODS staff and administration to create and manage schedules, activities, and community/family reading events related to R2S partnership with students
- Manage administrative duties, including maintaining Learning Circle and generating, distributing, and collecting student permission forms, applicable waivers, etc.
- Oversee the matching of R2S tutors/instructors with Chosen PODS students/small groups
- Build and maintain relationships with educators and administrators at schools where Chosen PODS students attend
- Track and analyze student data to inform lesson plans and equip teachers/tutors; maintain Learning Circle
- Actively seek and maintain current knowledge of literacy standards for elementary education, as well as culturally responsive curriculum, methodologies, and best practices
- Collaborate and communicate effectively with Chosen PODS staff, administration, and families to advance literacy in Asheville and Buncombe County and support children’s early literacy journeys
- Actively seek local and regional partnerships to develop, evaluate and promote culturally relevant youth literacy methodologies and programming
Supervision and Support
- Train staff, interns, volunteers, and contract reading teachers on how to support kindergarten readiness and foundational reading skill development in elementary students using the science of reading, i.e., phonemic awareness, oral language, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, etc.
- Observe, coach and provide one-to-one support for tutors and staff working with elementary students
- Prepare lesson plans, implement curricula, and support the management and use of the R2S resource library for Chosen PODS programming
- Assist in assigning, training, observing, and supporting R2S literacy tutors and staff while collaborating with Chosen PODS staff and administration literacy enrichment and instruction.
- Participate in professional development that supports and enhances the R2S mission
- Assist with tracking budget expenditures for all R2S programming at Chosen PODS After-School and Summer Camp, including, instructional materials, curricula, staff/contracts, tutor program expenses, etc.
- Participate in regular staff, partner, and volunteer meetings and other community events
- Support documentation and reporting efforts for R2S and Chosen PODS grants, Board of Directors meetings, etc.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required in Education, Child Development, or related field *or* actively pursuing a degree, licensure, or certification in education, child development, or related field
Experience
- 3+ years experience providing literacy education to young children (K-5th) and/or families
- Skilled and efficient with basic computer operating systems and software. Proficient in Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc.), Zoom, and Google Meet. Willing to explore and adopt innovative technology solutions.
- Demonstrates a commitment to understanding cultural diversity as it relates to elementary education. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have an understanding of existing resource inequities and barriers to access as it relates to elementary education. The ideal candidate will have the interest and ability to understand, communicate with and effectively advocate for diverse families (specifically communities of color pushed to the margins).

- Prepare lesson plans and implement curricula to teach language and literacy skills, learning, logic, and reasoning skills in collaboration with R2S staff (Grades K-5)
- Teach foundational literacy skills (i.e., phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension, vocabulary, etc. using Fundations phonics curricula and Heggerty phonemic awareness curricula
- Assist R2S staff with student progress monitoring and data collection and analysis
- Report on classroom activities, focus skills, and student successes
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education, Child Development, or related field. (Student teachers, instructional assistants, interventionists, and/or those pursuing teacher certification are welcome to apply.)
- Experience using Fundations phonics curriculum
- Experience using Heggerty or similar phonemic awareness curriculum
- Experience working with students and families who identify as BIPOC
- Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
- Knowledge of culturally-responsive teaching strategies
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities
